What is Collusion about?
With the Collusion app we see an opportunity to significantly raise people’s expectations of what is possible in productivity apps with the iPad. Nobody has stepped up to own the problem of digital writing and drawing on the iPad – to find a solution that is compelling in the everyday sense – so we did it.
Who is Collusion?
Collusion is a small team originally from Sydney, Australia, you can find more info here.
What’s with the name ‘Collusion’?
If you’re frowning about our name – cheers to you, you are the 5% (we conducted extensive market testing down the pub) of people who both know the definition of Collusion off the cuff .. and know that such a word is a marketing naughty. Why would we do such a thing? Well, we chose Collusion because it reflects a collaborative process in reaching a shared and larger goal for personal reward, which can be a very positive thing! This of course is a key theme of what we’ve built. “Collusion” was the closest word we could find to fit it, we then further rationalised it by agreeing amongst ourselves that it slips off the tongue quite nicely, and is kinda sticky. Say it in your best Barry White voice.. “Collusion”. How could you not like it. Yep, works for us, and we think it will grow on you too.
What is a Beta Backer and why should I care?
We created Beta Backer concept, because we wanted a way to work directly with our backers, (that would be you, – Kickstarter backer) to learn from your experiences using Collusion, and work directly with you to make it one awesome product. How you ask? We have very deliberately made Collusion a generalist tool, and resisted the temptation to make it fit a particular niche or use, which means there is plenty of scope to grow Collusion for specialist applications, for things like education, tele-presence in corporate offices, collaborative scrap booking…all kind of cool things. Contrary to the popular belief – great products don’t just pop into existence, full formed from brilliant minds. We’ve done a bunch of the heavy lifting and experienced our share of Eureka moments bringing Collusion to you. The next step is understanding how you use it, and how you would like to use it. The Beta Backers is how we help enable this.
What goodies do I get as a Beta Backer?
Beta Backer’s will be the first people in the world to get Collusion, well in advance of the public launch. As a Beta Backer, you get early delivery of the Limited Edition Kickstarter Pen Pack, 2 gift codes for the touch only preview of Collusion (usable till public launch) to share with your mates and access to the Collusion developer forum where you will be able to request features (see next question) and give feedback on the product.
I have a great idea, wish-list or suggestion for Collusion!
GREAT! Seriously, great! As long as it’s realistic and achievable, please add it to the forum when it opens at the end of our Kickstarter Campaign – your voice will help shape what gets built on Collusion for the public launch. If you have an idea on the hardware or industrial design, we want to hear your thoughts too, but understand the pen and receiver design have gone through years of development and refinement. Keep in mind though that the hardware is already designed and finalized, and so will not be changed for this release.
How mature is the Pen Hardware?
The technology is very mature and has been used for military purposes and also more recently with other iOS applications. We have been testing our software with the pen with hundreds of users over almost a year, we are confident that it works well.
Will Collusion pen work with other apps?
No. We’ve received a lot of questions on this point: Collusion is a tightly integrated hardware and software solution, we have worked hard to make it a great experience, and much of this great experience (with respect to the pen performance) comes down to the many months we have spent to make writing and drawing on the iPad with Collusion feel great. We decided not to support 3rd party apps very early on because we can’t control the quality of experience beyond our software. Case in point is Creggle/iPen – which is just the pen: Most software implementations made by apps to support these pens range from acceptable to pretty awful, as a result there are a lot of unhappy folks out there, and a few happy ones. It’s a business we have no interest in being involved with. The pen (our Collusion pen) is an enabling technology – and the way we have made it work (via software) is making a lot of people really happy, but its not the punchline.
Is Collusion campatible with the iPad Mini and the 4th gen iPad?
Yes, the Collusion app itself works on the iPad Mini and and the 4th generation iPad, however, Collusion pen hardware currently does not support the new Lightning connector.
When will the Lightning connector compatible Collusion hardware be available?
We are working on the Lightning connector compatible version of Collusion hardware but don’t have a definitive date yet. We will post an update on Kickstarter and our website once this is ready.
Does the palm rejection work?
Yes. In addition we’re are always making constant improvements. We believe it is critical in the user experience and we ensure you that you will be able to rest your hand comfortably on the screen and write with your pen. We think you will love it.
How many users can collude at once?
At the moment there are very little limits in the system especially around scale, this is because we want users to feel the freedom in the system, there is however large upper limits.
Will an SDK be available at some stage?
There will be no SDK in the short term. While we are aware that developing on Collusion could be amazing, we want to make sure that the basic collusion experience is complete before considering opening up the API to developers.
Thanks to those that have identified an issue with our drawing clips, they were shot with a high fps camera and included in our video at half speed. In response, our video will be adjusted to demonstrate the drawing at normal speed. Additionally, we have identified areas to further optimize our algorithms for you to ensure that any latency is fully minimized.
What does Collusion’s Cloud do?
Collusion’s Cloud runs the whole ‘box and die’ – it is your storage, manages your account, and makes real time collaboration possible. It ties these elements closely together… which brings us to the next question..
Can I use Drop Box (or other cloud storage services) instead of Collusion Cloud?
Collusion documents are really not like an ordinary document, it is more like a rich environment which is difficult to capture in simple file formats. We want your document to live as an environment no matter how you share it. However you will be able to take parts of your document and export them.
How real-time is Collusion?
Collusion treats your project as a live workspace. We’re going to great lengths to make using collusion as fast and responsive as possible; mostly near instant. We run our infrastructure on the fastest cloud service on the planet (OrionVM). Everything on your canvas is synchronized, the biggest variance on latency and speed will be the internet connection between your device and your service provider.
Is Collusion usable over mobile Internet, and how bandwidth hungry is it?
Yes, Collusion is network type independent and will work with any modern Internet connections that are reasonably quick. We’ve designed Collusion’s communications protocols to be as light as possible for mobile users, resulting in better performance and minimized data usage. Please note that using a lot of photos and video will mean a significant increase in data usage. We recommend using available WIFI at an office or at home otherwise a 3G connection will be fine for mobile usage.
How much does the cloud service cost?
The basic service that is included with Collusion comes free of charge (500MB of storage and private projects with up to two Collaborators – ongoing). We will offer tiered packages for more space and private collaborators, as well around expected uses such as business enterprise and education. The composition and pricing of these packages will start at a few dollars a month, be based in part on your feedback, and published on our site with the public launch of Collusion.
